It deals with the electronic structure ( configuration ) of the central metal ion in the central metals ground state, kind of bonding and magnetic properties according to this theory.
1. The central metal atom makes avilable a number of s, p,d orbitals equal to the number of ligands which is called by co ordination number.
2. The vacant orbitals hybridises together to form equal number of hybrid orbitals that hybridises which are equivalent in energy and definit geometry.
3. Ligands are these atom/molecule that contains at least one sigma bond and a lone pair of eleectron or a neagtive charge.
4. Vacant hybrid orbitals of the metal atom or ion overlap with the filled sigma orbitals that contain a pair of electron (ligands) to form
ligand→metal sigma bond this bod which forms is known as coordination bond is a special type of covalent bonding.
